Air-conditioning

Split-system air-conditioning in Brisbane

A split system is the most common way to cool a Brisbane home: an indoor head on the wall, an outdoor condenser, and a refrigerant pipe run between them. Done well it is quiet, efficient and almost invisible. Done poorly it is noisy, undersized and leaves a pipe run stapled across the front of the house.

  • ARCtick L169731
  • Fully insured

Two things determine which one you get. Sizing, which has to come from the room rather than a rule of thumb, and positioning, which decides both how the air actually moves and how the installation looks.

What it covers

What's included.

Room assessment and sizing

Room dimensions, orientation, glazing, insulation and how the space is used, rather than a capacity guessed from floor area.

Indoor head positioning

Placed so airflow carries across the room instead of straight into a wall or down onto a seat.

Outdoor unit siting

Positioned for airflow and serviceability, kept clear of doorways and windows, and level on its mounts.

Pipe and drain runs

Refrigerant lines and condensate drain planned for the shortest sensible route and clipped straight.

The electrical side

The circuit and isolation handled by the same licensed person doing the refrigerant work.

Commissioning

The system is evacuated, charged to spec, run up and checked before handover.

Why people call

Common reasons for this job.

  • A bedroom or living room is unusable through summer
  • An existing unit is old, noisy or no longer cooling
  • A renovation or extension has added a room
  • Ducted is not practical for the building
  • A rental property needs cooling in the main living area
  • Cooling is wanted in one or two rooms rather than the whole house

How Hoff works

The approach.

Sizing gets done from the room. North and west facing rooms with large glazing take considerably more load than a shaded south facing bedroom of the same floor area, and an undersized unit that runs flat out all afternoon costs more to run than a correctly sized one.

Positioning is walked through with you before anything is fixed. Where the head goes changes how the room feels, and where the outdoor unit goes changes what you hear from the bedroom window and what the front of the house looks like.

Because Hoff holds both the ARCtick refrigerant licence and the electrical contractor licence, the circuit, the isolator and the refrigerant work are all done by the same person. There is no waiting on a second trade and no gap where each blames the other.

Work involving refrigerant requires ARCtick authorisation. Hoff holds ARCtick licence L169731 and Electrical Contractor Licence 90673, so both sides of the installation are covered. Electrical work is tested and certified on completion, and installed equipment carries its manufacturer warranty.

Suitable for

Where this comes up.

  • Single rooms and bedrooms
  • Living areas
  • Apartments and units
  • Extensions and renovations
  • Homes where ducted is impractical

Split systems questions.

It depends on room dimensions, which way it faces, how much glazing it has, insulation and how the room is used. Floor area alone is not enough. Hoff sizes it from the actual room, because both undersizing and oversizing cause problems.
